The Port of Pittsburgh Commission is a state agency that promotes the inland waterway system in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The PPC represents 13 counties in this region.
Over the past decade there has been a significant reduction in the tonnage of cargo moving on the the waterways. If this trend continues, there will be significant decrease in federal funding for the operation and maintenance of the 22 locks and dams in the navigation district.
The PPC's mission is to promote the commercial use and development of the inland waterway system to support the economic, recreational, environmental and intermodal interests of our region.
In order to identify ways to increase volume, we are seeking consultants with expertise on the inland waterway system and economic development. They will need to complete the following tasks:
1) Identify new and underserved cargoes
2) Identify properties for economic development
3) Work with stakeholders to identify needs for growth
4) Develop plan for container-on-barge facilities or means of shipping 5) Assemble advisory committee
6) Write and submit grant applications
7) Update and review Strategic Plan
